A Collaboration With Panavision: Robbie Ryan, BSC, ISC

The Kinds of Kindness cinematographer discusses the intense, rewarding experience of filmmaking.

With credits that include American Honey, The Favourite, C’mon C’mon and Kinds of Kindness, cinematographer Robbie Ryan, BSC, ISC has made a career of choosing projects that are ripe for visual experimentation. “I like not knowing what I’m doing every day,” he shares. “That’s something that keeps me excited.” In this video, Ryan discusses how he came to find the 6mm lens that helped define The Favourite’s visual language, the “poetic documentary” approach he and director Mike Mills crafted for C’mon C’mon, and coping with the “film blues” that come with wrapping principal photography. The cinematographer also stresses the importance of being adaptable in facilitating the director’s vision and serving the story being told. “It’s all about trying to make the right decisions for the film,” he says.
