DXL2 Receives “Filmed In Imax” Certification
IMAX Corp. has unveiled the “Filmed in IMAX” program, a new partnership with leading camera manufacturers to meet filmmaker demand for the IMAX Experience. Through the program, IMAX certifies high-end, best-in-class digital cameras, including Panavision’s Millennium DXL2, to work in the IMAX format when paired with IMAX’s proprietary mastering process. Additionally, the program certifies camera rental houses, including Panavision, that can supply certified cameras worldwide.
“This program will help IMAX work with a broader and more diverse group of top filmmakers, sparking new and exciting collaborations that can take advantage of our proprietary technology and global theatrical platform,” says Megan Colligan, President of IMAX Entertainment.
Panavision’s Millennium DXL2 large-format digital camera system incorporates the RED Monstro sensor to offer 16-bit RAW output with 16 stops of dynamic range and a base ISO of 1600, capturing 35-megapixel images at up to 60 fps and 8K resolution. Featuring an intuitive user interface and unique modular design, the lightweight, ergonomic camera allows for custom configurations and streamlined functionality with accessories and lenses. Additionally, the DXL2’s 600-nit Primo HDR viewfinder incorporates customized Panavision optics and displays a 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio.
In addition to the DXL2, the new program certifies a number of other large-format cameras in Panavision’s rental inventory, including Alexa LF, Mini LF, and Venice, all of which are available in Panavised versions that work seamlessly with Panavision lenses and accessories. These cameras join Panavision’s 65mm-format System 65 film cameras and industry-leading inventory of large-format optics as approved tools for IMAX-certified capture.
